The Story About Ping
Marjorie Flack and Kurt Wiese
Viking Puffin
First published 1933; multiple reprints
Ages 3 to 7
A classic children's book, a special gift for a special child.. It's rare indeed for a picture/storybook for this age group to stay around for over sixty years. Story and pictures are inseparable, blending beautifully together. The illustrations look simple but the line is lovely, the product of a considerable artistic gift. Ping is a little duck who gets himself into an awkward fix on the Yangtze River in China. The book has atmosphere and charm, a strong story, character and humour. Great for reading aloud to little ones, excellent too for that key transitional stage between six and seven when children begin reading on their own. At this stage children are keen to exercise the independence which comes with their new-found skill and it's an awkward age to find good books for.
